CT-Guided Biopsy
When a scan shows a nodule, mass or area of concern in the lung, a CT-guided biopsy lets us take a small tissue sample from exactly the right spot. Real-time CT images guide a fine needle through the chest wall to the target, giving the laboratory a sample to work with — often avoiding the need for surgery just to reach a diagnosis.
When it is recommended
- A lung nodule or mass that needs a tissue diagnosis
- An unexplained shadow or mass on a CT scan
- Suspected lung cancer or infection
- Lesions near the chest wall that are hard to reach by bronchoscopy
What it involves
Under local anaesthesia and CT guidance, a thin needle is advanced to the target, its position confirmed on the scan, and a sample taken. The procedure usually takes 30–45 minutes.
What to expect
You are monitored afterwards and have a chest X-ray to check for any small air leak. Most people go home the same day; mild discomfort or a little blood-streaked phlegm can occur and settles quickly.
Getting ready
- Tell us about blood-thinning medicines and any allergies
- You may be asked not to eat for a few hours beforehand
- Arrange for someone to accompany you home
